James was born in Ireland and baptized into the LDS Chuch.
Married Sarah Scott Feb. 08, 1838 Far West, Caldwell county, Missouri.

Engaged in clerical work for Joseph Smith, 1838.
Scribe for 2 of Joseph Smiths’s journals, fall 1838 and 1839.
Scribe in dictation of Joseph Smith’s personal history, beginning 11 June 1839.11 Appointed clerk for land contracts and sub-treasurer of church at Commerce, 20 Oct. 1839.
James mulholland also wrote books on poetry while at Navoo. Many of the his entries in his personal journal mention “writing for the Church” James Mulholland’s tenure as a scribe was cut short when he died on 3 November 1839, possibly the victim of a stroke.
