SUDDEN DEATH OF WILLIAM PICKETT
William Pickett, an oldtime newspaper man of this city and latterly employed on the Albina Courier, was found dead in the hallway of his lodging room, near the bakery on Russell and Delay streets, Albina, at 5:30 o’clock yesterday morning. From the position of his body when found, the presumption is that he fell down a short flight of stairs and was smothered before regaining consciousness. This is the opinion of Dr. J.J. Fisher, who was called in soon after the body was found. The body was on the floor with the face down and the feet on the first step above the stair landing. The remains were removed by the morgue during the forenoon, and at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon Coroner Rivers held an inquest. The jury found that the deceased came to his death from natural causes about 1 o’clock yesterday morning. The deceased was 71 years of age, and leaves a daughter and two sons, who reside in California. Mr. Pickett came to this state about 1864, and for a time was connected with a paper at Albany. He has been a resident of this city almost continuously for some twenty-two or twenty-three years, and has been connected with a number of newspapers, and has worked in the greater numbers of printing offices in this city. He came from some part of the South originally. He was well connected, and a man of considerable education, but has long been addicted to intemperance.
