Saint Matthew's Episcopal Church was established in 1822 as a missionary station in what was then the "small country village" of Francisville through the efforts of Reverend Benjamin Allen, Rector of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church. The cornerstone was laid on October 17, 1822 on the corner of Schuylkill North Fourth Street (now 18th Street), at the corner of Powell and George Streets, and the building was consecrated on June 7, 1844.
Within a short time, the congregation demanded a consecrated burial ground, and so a half acre was eventually purchased on George (now Ginnodo) Street, south of the Church, on a lot adjoining the "The Vineyard" Public Burial Ground.
On August 6, 1857, the church purchased a lot on the northeast corner of 18th and Girard, and a new church was consecrated on December 23, 1858. The burial ground was disposed of around the same time. Today, the site lies immediately south of Poplar Street at 20th and is occupied by houses.
