Revolutionary War Continental Army Brigadier General, Continental Congressman. A 1769 graduate of Brown University, he took up the law profession following graduation. He gave five years of military service during the Revolutionary War and ended with the rank of Brigadier General. He was a delegate from Rhode Island in the Continental Congress from 1780 to 1781 and again in 1787. In 1787 he was appointed as a judge on the United States Supreme Court of the Northwest Territory, at which time he moved to Marietta, Ohio, and died not long afterward. He was the brother of Massachusetts Congressman and Senator Joseph Bradley Varnum.
He has a cenotaph in Dracut, Massachussetts, where he is from, and where his parents are buried.
