Major League Baseball Player. For six seasons (1955 to 1960), he was a left-handed pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates. Born Donald John Gross, he attended Michigan State University and was signed as an amateur free agent by the Cincinnati Reds in 1950. Following service with the United States Army, he made his Major League debut on July 21, 1955. In 1956, he yielded an impressive 1.95 ERA in 19 games and the following season (1957), he produced a career-high seven wins in 43 games, as he split time between the starting rotation and bullpen. He was acquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1957 and in 1960, he was briefly part of the team which went on to win the World Series. In 145 career regular season games, he compiled a 20 win, 22 loss record, in 398 innings-pitched. After retiring from baseball, he co-operated a sporting goods business.
