US Congressman from New Hampshire. He studied law, including three years spent traveling in Europe, and became a lawyer in Alstead, New Hampshire in 1790. In 1795 he moved to Keene, and then Charlestown. While in Charlestown he gave up practicing law and became a farmer. He served in the New Hampshire House of Representatives from 1802 to 1803. In 1802 Hunt won a seat in the US House as a Federalist in a special election held to fill the vacancy caused by Joseph Peirce's resignation. He won reelection to a full term later in 1802, and served from December 1802 to March 1805. Hunt did not run for reelection in 1804, and in 1805 purchased over 4,000 acres of land in what later became Gallia County, Ohio. After clearing it and making numerous improvements he led a group of New Hampshire residents who intended to settle there. Hunt contracted yellow fever en route and died soon after his return to Ohio.
