Roman Catholic Cardinal. Hausen born Julius August Döpfner received his education at the Augustinian Gymnasium in Münnerstadt, the Diocesan Seminary of Würzburg and later at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome from where he obtained a doctorate in theology in 1941. Ordained priest there on October 29, 1939 by Msgr. Luigi Traglia, back in Germany he was named chaplain of Großwallstadt in the diocese of Würzburg and successively, prefect in Kilianeum in 1945 and assistant and later subgerent of the Seminary of Würzburg. Elected bishop of Würzburg at the early age of thirty five, Döpfner received his episcopal consecration on October 14, 1948 in Neumünsterkirche, Würzburg, from Msgr. Josef Otto Kolb, Archbishop of Bamberg, being at the time of his election the youngest bishop in the world. Transferred to the diocese of Berlin on January 15, 1957, Pope John XXIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of December 15, 1958 with the title of Santa Maria della Scala at the age of forty five, becoming thus the youngest member of the Sacred College of Cardinals. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Münich und Freising on July 3, 1961, he was one of the members of the Board of Presidency of the Second Vatican Council alongside Cardinals Giacomo Lercaro, Gregoire-Pierre Agaganian and Leo–Jozef Suenens. Chairman of the German Episcopal Conference from 1966 until his death, Cardinal Döpfner died on July 24, 1976, at eight in the morning at the archiepiscopal residence of Münich after suffering a heart attack.
