Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as a Captain in the 9th New York State Militia regiment. He then entered Federal service as a Captain in the 83rd New York Volunteer Infantry. Lastly, he was promoted to Colonel and commander of the 119th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "meritorious conduct in the campiagn ending with the occupation of Atlanta, Ga."
