Author. His lack of success as a lawyer allowed him to indulge in fiction writing, and he became one of Great Britain's most popular authors during his time for his historical adventure and romance novels. Of his thirty-one novels published between 1890 and 1928, "Under The Red Robe" published in 1894, became his most enduring. It was twice made into a motion picture, first in 1923 and then in 1937. Despite their popularity at the turn of the 20th Century, his works have fallen into obscurity and are largely forgotten today.
