Actress, Novelist. Educated in the United States, Great Britain and France, she made her theatrical debut in the 1924 Broadway play "Red Falcon." She appeared in nearly two dozen Broadway productions spanning over four decades. Her theatrical accomplishments include: "Embers" (1926), "The Happy Husband" (1928), "The Animal Kingdom" (1932), "Days Without End" (1934), "On to Fortune" (1935), "Keep Off the Grass" (1940) and "Barefoot in the Park" from 1963 to 1967. She made her motion picture debut in 1929, appearing in "Paris Bound," "Rich People" and "Red Hot Rhythm." Her other notable film credits include "The Animal Kingdom" (1932), "Soak the Rich" (1936), "No Time for Love" (1943), "Johnny Dark" (1954) and "The Big Knife" in 1955. She made her final film appearance in the 1960 motion picture "Ocean's Eleven" as the mother of actor Peter Lawford. In 1960 she was the recipient of two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one for her work in motion pictures and one for her work in the television industry during the 1950s. In addition to her acting credits, she was an accomplished travel and fiction novelist.
