MARY M GATES

Mary Melissa "Mollie" (Lee) Smith Burge Gates

1849 - 1943

Mollie was the daughter of Everett and Sarah (Anderson) Lee, of Fannin, Mississippi.

Mollie married James Jefferson Smith in Rankin County, Mississippi.

They had three daughters together:

Mary Jeffie, born in about 1877,

Sarah Katherine, born in 1879,

and BessyLee, born in 1882.

There is also a son, R L Smith, age 9, listed in the 1880 census.

Mollie's first husband, James Jefferson Smith, died in July of 1884.

In the summer of 1890, Mollie Smith and her 3 daughters walked beside a covered wagon from Mississippi to Texas. Mollie's brother, Rev Jesse A Lee (memorial 58651346) and his wife Dora, were likely part of this same trip.

In 1893, Mollie married Nicolas H Burge, who died just six years later.

The 1900 Census shows Mollie Burge living with her daughter, Jeffie (Mary J) Williamson, in San Jacinto County, Texas.

In 1903, she married John G Gates, a Civil War veteran, and continued to live in San Jacinto County.

Mr Gates died 15 years later.

In 1920, Mollie (Mary M Gates) lived with her daughter Kate (Sarah Katherine Smith) White in Cleveland, Texas.

In 1930, 1935, and 1940, Mollie lived with her daughter, BessyLee Smith Belitz, in Houston, Texas.

Mollie died on 13 August 1943 in Houston, Texas.
