ANNANDALE, Va. - Retired Army Master Sgt. James F. Murphy, 80, of 7519 Little River Turnpike, formerly of Worcester, Mass., died July 4 in his home after an illness.
He was born in Worcester, son of Martin and Winifred (Loftus) Murphy, and lived many years in the Washington, D.C., area.
He graduated from St. John's High School, then in Worcester.
Mr. Murphy served in the Navy from 1929 to 1931. He then worked at the former Bell Co. in Worcester.
Mr. Murphy then served for 30 years in the Army, enlisting in 1942. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 8th Army under Gen. George S. Patton in the European-African-Middle Eastern theater. He received several battle stars. He also served in Korea during the Korean War. He retired as a master sergeant in 1972.
Mr. Murphy was a security overseer at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., before he retired.
He was a member of St. Michael's Church.
A military funeral was held July 10 from Colonial Funeral Home, Falls Church, with a Mass in the Old Chapel at Fort Meyer, Arlington. Burial was in Arlington National Cemetery . Memorial contributions may be made to the Jimmy Fund, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston, Mass. 02115
