Deceased Name: WILLIAM ROURKE

William A. Rourke of 43869 Laburnam Square, Ashburn, Va., former administrative assistant to U.S. Rep. Harold D. Donohue, D-Worcester, and U.S. Rep. Joseph D. Early, D-Worcester, died Saturday in his home after an illness.

He was born in Worcester, son of Mr. and Mrs. James J. Rourke.

SERVED 37 YEARS

Mr. Rourke served as Congressman Donohue's administrative assistant from 1947 to 1975. When Congressman Early succeeded Donohue in 1975, he appointed Mr. Rourke as administrative assistant in his Washington office. Mr. Rourke retired in November 1984 after 37 years continuous service. He was active in Donohue's successful 1946 campaign for Congress.

Congressman Early said yesterday of Mr. Rourke's death: "The death of William A. Rourke marks the passing of a unique, productive and dedicated public servant. Marilyn and I extend our deep condolences to his wife, Margaret, his children, Stephen and Ann, and his two sisters, Marie and Gertrude. Bill Rourke was a brilliant man. He loved his work, in which he had the opportunity to continuously help the people of Central Massachusetts. Both Harold Donohue and I were fortunate indeed to have had the benefit of Bill's wisdom and skills. A significant portion of the accomplishments for which Harold Donohue and I received public credit was really the product of Bill's tireless efforts. Literally thousands of residents of the Third Congressional District were the beneficiaries of Mr. Rourke's knowledge and hard work. He preferred to remain a private man."

Mr. Rourke was graduated from St. John's Preparatory School, where he was a member of the debating team. He was a magna cum laude graduate of Holy Cross College and did graduate work at Boston University and Harvard University.

Before World War II, Mr. Rourke taught seven years at Classical High School. In 1942, he was commissioned a lieutenant in the Navy and spent 18 months in the South Pacific. He ended his military career as a lieutenant commander and executive officer of VD-3, a Navy photographic squadron.

After the war, Mr. Rourke returned to Worcester and taught science and mathematics at Commerce High School before becoming administrative assistant to Donohue.
