HENDERSON — Murray Ballou Scott, 86, of 12205 Mill St., died January 9, 2013, at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, where he had been a patient for a day.
Mr. Scott, a lifelong Henderson resident, was a World War II veteran and a partner for decades with his twin, Merrill C., in Scott's Garage in Henderson.
Murray, son of Victor A. and Bessie (Carpenter) Scott, was born November 29, 1926, at his parents' home on Main Street. He was a Boy Scout in his youth. During World War II while he was in high school, he was an Air Raid Warden and a Sky Watcher.
Murray and Merrill were members of the Class of 1945 at Henderson Central School, and they graduated early, in January 1945 so they could enlist in the Army Air Corps. They were aboard ship bound for Europe in May 1945 when the war in Europe ended, and they were sent to southern Germany for peacekeeping duty. They also attended the Nuremburg Trials as military observers. They were honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Henderson.
Murray and Merrill completed a program in automotive mechanics at H.W. Smith Technical School in Syracuse in 1949. That year, the brothers assisted their father in construction of the "new" Scott's Mobil full-service AAA station and garage on Main Street. It replaced the original business begun in 1936 across the street.
The brothers formed a partnership, M&M Scott, and took over the business upon the death of their father in 1960. The garage was a Henderson landmark and the brothers were an ever-present source of news and assistance – not just automotive – for 44 years until they retired and closed the garage on Halloween night 2004. Counting the years with their father, they worked in the garage for 68 years.
Murray married Adeline (Elioff) of Eastwood, a neighborhood of Syracuse, on May 20, 1950, in Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, Syracuse. They were married for 62 years, and raised four sons and three daughters.
Survivors include his wife, Adeline; sons Paul M., and his companion, Debra Weaver, Panama City, Fla., Gregory L., and his wife, Dawn, of Henderson, William H., and his wife, Michele, of Baldwinsville, and Robert T., and his wife, Sheryl, of Southwest Ranches, Fla.; daughters Elaine J. Scott, of Henderson, Ann M. Scott-Smith, and her husband, Timothy, of Hillsborough, N.J., and Barbara E. Scott-Brewer, and her husband, Edward, of Levittown, Pa.; his twin brother, Merrill C., a resident at Samaritan-Keep Home in Watertown; 18 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Murray was a member of the Henderson Volunteer Fire Department from 1940 to 1975, serving as acting fire chief and chief from 1960 to 1975. He was instrumental in the creation of the fire department's annual Children's Christmas Party and its evening recreation program for youth. He also was involved with the accidental start of the free volunteer ambulance service by throwing a cot in the fire department's equipment vehicle. The ambulance service continues today.
Murray, in conjunction with HCS Principal Kenneth Lamb and American Legion Post Officer Harold Secor, began the annual Henderson Memorial Day Parade & Veterans Observance in 1963. Murray was its master of ceremonies for many years. That event will mark its 50th anniversary this year. Murray and Merrill were the veterans of honor at the parade and ceremony in 2009.
He also was a member of the Henderson Alumni Association, the Henderson Historical Society, the Independent Garagemen's Association, the Henderson Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce, and the South Jefferson Chamber of Commerce. He was a 53-year member of Don Rounds American Legion Post in Adams, and a 62-year member of the American Automobile Association. He was a communicant of Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, Henderson.
Calling hours will be Friday January 18th from 4 pm – 7 pm and Saturday, January 19th from 10 – 11 am at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville.
