Reuben Kelby Hash was born January 15, 1847* in Bridle Creek, Virginia during slavery. The story that has been handed down from one generation to the next generation is that Reuben was the child of a slave on the Hash Farm, Jane, and William Thomas "Tommy" Hash, the son of the Farm owners, William H and Nancy (Anderson) Hash.

NOTE FROM ESTELLE GAMBILL IN ALLEGHANY HERITAGE BOOK PAGE 218: "He would have been sold with his mother but the "missus" had a special love for him, hid him and raised him like a son."

After freedom Reuben married Frankey/Frankie Reeves, the daughter of Anderson and Selia Reeves on January 2, 1875 and they had four children: Rosa Jane, John Hillary "Harry", Laura Ennis and Myrtle "Myrtie" Edythe.

He was a shoemaker by trade, traveling from place to place, often being away form home for weeks at a time. He also was a farmer.

Frankey/Frankie passed (exact date unknown, but between 1880 and 1884) leaving Reuben and their four young children.

Reuben then united with Fannie Carol Parks in 1884 and to their union two additional children were born: James "Jim" Blaine and Charles "Charlie" Younger.

Reuben passed Thursday, July 13, 1905 in Sparta, North Carolina.

*This date was taken from Reuben's headstone, however the "Virginia, Select Marriages, 1785-1940 list his birth year as 1855 (likewise the 1880 US Census), it also list Hash (no first name) as his father and Jemima Hash as his mother.
