Urban H. Bates, 79, died June 26, 2005, at Mount Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor.
He was born Dec. 29, 1925, in Hartland, the son of Lee J. and Marion (Spaulding) Bates.
He attended school in Hartland and graduated from Windsor High School in 1944.
Mr. Bates was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Navy.
He married Shirley O'Neill in Windsor on June 15, 1947.
He was employed at the former Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 39 years until the plant closed in 1987. Mr. Bates worked at Mount Ascutney Resort in Brownsville for several years and later worked as a medical courier for North Country Medical Courier Service in Lebanon. He was most recently employed in the Radiology Department at Mount Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor, and did volunteer work there where he served as an incorporator.
Mr. Bates was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor where he served on the parish council and as a Eucharistic minister. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in White River Junction, American Legion Post 25 in Windsor and the Windsor War Memorial Committee. He was a longtime member of the John P. Larkin Country Club in Windsor where he served as treasurer for several years.
He served as a justice of the peace, on the Windsor zoning board, on the Windsor Public Library board of trustees and the Gilbert F. Davis Home for the Aged board of trustees. He also served with the American Red Cross in Windsor. He was a member of the Windsor Area Jaycees and Kiwanis Club.
He enjoyed gardening and spending time at York Beach, Maine.
Survivors include his wife of Windsor; a daughter, Karen Terry of White River Junction; two grandsons; two nieces and one nephew.
Mr. Bates was predeceased by two brothers, Glen Bates and Edward Bates; and a sister, Glenna Bates.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor.
The funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor. The Rev. Paul Belhumeur, M.S., pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery.
