While in Colorado she worked for the W.P.A.
On June 2, 1932 she married Clinton "Clint" Carlyle Cheek in Larmar Colorado. In 1935 they were visiting Santa Monica, California when she went into labor and had Patricia Lee Cheek who was born healthy and her twin brother, Robert "Bobby" Clinton Cheek, who was stillborn. They returned to Colorado and buried their baby boy and lived there until 1939 when they moved to southern California. In 1940 their son, Monte Eugene Cheek was born in Glendale, California.
After moving to California, Edith held a few different jobs, including being "Rosie the Riveter" during WWII, she worked for the California State Unemployment office and Los Angeles City Schools District in the kitchen the longest. She was working for the L.A. Schools when she retired in 1973.
After Clint's death in 1961, Edith met Raymond "Bud" Lynn Pawson at a senior citizen dance. They dated for 7 years before they married on Sept. 7, 1968 and moved to Kagel Canyon, California to make their home. In 1977 Edith and Bud moved to Paradise Pines in Magalia California where together, they built a beautiful, custom, dream home.
Bud had 4 daughters, thereby giving Edith 4 beautiful step-daughters; Betty Perle Pawson Breaux, Gloria Mildred Pawson Hertzler, Barbara Esta Howell Miller and the youngest being me, Claudia Veray Pawson Goodman. I was 15 when my dad, Bud, married Edith making her more than my step mother, she became the Mom of My Heart. She help finish raising me to be the woman I am today. I'm very proud to call her my Mom!
Edith was also active in several community groups and clubs, including being the past President of the Long Beach Chapter of the Grandmothers Club and later in life she became an active member of The Butte County Senior Gleaners.
Edith's husband Bud died in 1986 and she remained in their home until 1991 when she decided to downsize to an apt and moved to Paradise, California. Within a year her daughter Pat moved her back down to the Long Beach area and about 3 blocks from her house. Pat felt that Edith could "no longer take care of herself" and moved her in with her and her husband. By the end of 1996 Pat and her husband, Frank, put Edith in a Convalescent Home in Torrance CA. and they moved to Lake Elsinore. Sadly Edith died in that home at 91 years of age.
Edith is survived by 6 of her 7 children and was preceded in death by her parents, a son, both husbands, and 4 of her 5 siblings. Harry Walter Strode 1910 – 1943, Pearl Louise Strode Davis 1912 – 1986, Mary Kathryn Strode Garner 1914 – 1980, Alice Mable Strode Harvey 1922 – 1973.
Edith has numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
