Inventor. Born in France, he was the art director for the New York Herald newspaper when he developed a process of engraving photo plates. The company described the idea as idiotic, so he went to the rival newspaper company the Daily Graphic, which became the first to debut his half-tone printing process for the printed reproduction of photographs in newsprint in 1880.
