Both of his parents were born in Poland and immigrated to Portland, Oregon where the Buckman family was a founding family of that city.
Tony's father, "John" Buckman was a dairy & wheat farmer.
Tony's mother, Lena, died when he was 5. One day while she was making breakfast her long hair caught on fire from the oil stove she used. She died 3 days later in the hospital.
Eventually, as a result of the loss of his mother, Tony & his sister Helen were sent to live in separate Catholic orphanages in the Portland area.
While there, he earned himself the nickname "Tuffy" because he was a fighter.
He also earned a dual scholarship to Gonzaga University due to his excellence in basketball & football.
However, he decided not to pursue an education there.
He was a Master Baker for most of his life.
He sent both of his daughters to private Catholic schools & bought his wife a beautiful upright baby grand piano.
He also played golf well enough to win tournaments.
I am told he played at the Presidio in San Francisco.
He also liked to smoke filterless Camel cigarettes, which were the end of him.
