Nancy Edwards and Josiah Isaac Daugherty married about 1798, and their oldest children were born in Lee County, Virginia. The Daughertys seem to have moved to Tennessee about 1810, and by the 1830 federal census, Josiah Daugherty is in Jefferson County, Tennessee, with 10 free white persons listed in the household: 1 male 50–59; 2 males 15–19; 1 male 10–14; 1 male 5–9; 1 male under 5; 1 female 40–49; 1 female 15–19; 1 female 10–14; and 1 female 5–9. Other members of the Daugherty/Doherty families also had moved to Jefferson County.

Josiah, Nancy, Preston, and Rachel Daugherty were charter members of the Old Ocoee Baptist Church, organized August 13, 1836. Josiah and Nancy's daughter and son-in-law, Catherine Edwards Daugherty and John Maxwell Ritchey, also were charter members.

In 1840 the Daughertys are listed in Polk County, and Josiah Daugherty is mentioned in some of the county's earliest court records, when the Court ordered that he be released from payment of poll tax for the year 1844. A list of brethren and sisters of the Ocoee United Baptist Church, dated May 2, 1844, includes family members Josiah Daugherty, Nancy Daugherty, Louisa J Daugherty, Isaac Daugherty, John Richie, Joseph Daugherty, Martha Daugherty, James Daugherty, Katharine Richie, N J Richie, and Alexander Richie.
