Arthur DeHate, 77, of Elgin, and Earl Smith, 72, of Onaway drowned near shore at Empire when their small boat capsized in powerful breakers. A third man in the boat was able to reach shore safely.

The MC 7722 GH, a 15-foot outboard motorboat, capsized trying to land through the surf at Empire, but changed its heading at the last moment instead of making a straight path for the beach.
