Enlisted, December 13, 1914, in Troop C, 1st NY Cavalry Regiment, Brooklyn, NY. Mustered-in, June 30 1916, for Mexican border service with Troop C, 1st NY Cavalry. The 1st NY Cavalry was stationed at Camp McAllen, Texas, part of the 6th New York Division ( later to be th 27th Division ). He returned with his Troop to Brooklyn and mustered-out of border service, March 20, 1917.

World War 1, called into federal service as a Sergeant in Troop C, 1st NY Cavalry then promoted to 1st Sergeant.

Commissioned , 2nd Lieutenant, July 6, 1918, promoted 1st Lieutenant, April 23,1918 and Captain Feb. 19, 1919. The 1st NY Cavalry reorganized for the World War as the 104th & 106th Machine Gun Battalions, 27th Division. He was assigned to Headquarters, 104th Machin Gun Battalion, 27th Division.

After training at Camp Wadsworth, SC, the 104th Machine Gun Battalion deployed to Europe, May 8, 1918. He saw combat in both Belgium & France. Returning to the States March 19, 1919, aboard the USS Seattle, docking at Hoboken, NJ ( the 104th Machine Gun Battalion was the last unit, of the 27th Division, to return home ). He march in the great " Welcome Home Parade " for the 27th Division, up 5th Avenue, in New York City, on March 25, 1919.

He was discharged from the service as a Captain, April 3, 1919, at Camp Upton, NY.
