The funeral for Charles A. Helvie, of 15296 Fawdry Road Sackets Harbor, NY will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of TLC Funeral Home, Inc. Calling hours will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Sulphur Springs Cemetery. Mr. Helvie died at the Ellis Farm Hospice House of Jefferson County on May 13th.

He was born in Huntington, Indiana to Charles A. and Georgia Forrest Helvie Sr. on May 30, 1921. He graduated from Gouverneur High School. Mr. Helvie entered the Army Air Force on July 28, 1942 at Camp Upton, New York and was honorably discharged on January 31, 1946. While in service, Mr. Helvie was awarded the WWII Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and American Theatre Ribbon and was also selected for the National School of Aeronautics. He married Lura Gates on June 28, 1942 at Natural Dam, NY with Pastor Emily Harland officiating. Mr. Helvie worked as a machinist manufacturing train brakes at New York Air Brake after 42.5 years of service. He retired on December 23, 1983.

Mr. Helvie enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing and was a Life member of the Odd Fellows, International Association for Machinist, and danced with the groups of Country Kuzzins and Adams Apples Dance Clubs with his life long dance partner and wife, Lura. He is survived by his wife, Lura, his daughter and son in law, Mrs. John (Ellen) Halligan of Baldwinsville, NY, two grandchildren Mrs. Brian (Shannon) Halligan of Rochester and Erin Halligan of Brockport, NY, a great grand daughter Lilly Halligan of Rochester, a brother Carl Helvie of Virginia Beach, VA, two sisters and and three brother in laws, Beatrice Cheeseman of Tucson, Arizona, Maurice "Buster" and Marie Sullivan of Rochester, NY, Ronald and Laura Cronk of Minoa, NY and several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Mack and Paul Helvie and a brother in law, John Cheeseman died before him.
