Civil War Union Brigadier General, US Congressman, Indiana Governor. Prior to the Civil War, he was a US District Attorney when he enlisted and was commissioned Colonel of the 24th Indiana Infantry. He served in Missouri, participated at Shiloh and was promoted Brigadier General. In late 1862, he commanded a division in Arkansas, in the Vicksburg Campaign and at Champion Hill. In May 1864, he served a tour of recruiting duty in Indiana and returned to command a division of the XXIII Corps in the Atlanta Campaign. For distinguished service, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers in July 1864. After the war, he was sent to Peru as US minister and remained there until 1870. He then returned to Indiana, where he practiced law and was elected as a Republican to the Fiftieth Congress, serving 1887 to 1888. In 1888, he was elected the twenty-first Governor of Indiana and served until his death.
