Forest R. Sheldon, 78, Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, formerly of Fort Jackson, died Dec. 8 in Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor, Maine, from complications of chronic emphysema.

Mr. Sheldon served with the Navy during World War II as a quartermaster during the European-African and Asiatic-Pacific campaigns. He was employed by Central New York Power Corp. in Potsdam and Watertown and sold Surge farm equipment, receiving an award as a top salesman.

Born March 21, 1919, in Fort Jackson, a son of Eli Ray and Ruby Elizabeth Thurston Sheldon, he was a 1939 graduate of St. Regis Falls High School, a graduate of the Environmental Science and Forestry Ranger School, Wanakena, and a 1953 graduate of the University of Maine at Orono, where he received a degree in horticulture and vocational agriculture.

He married Virginia Lorraine Moxcey on Aug. 14, 1943, in the United Methodist Church, Portland, Maine. She died in 1984. He later married Margaret Ellen Salley, who died in 1995.

He was a 4-H member and agent, receiving a garden champion award in 1938 and attending the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago, Ill.

Surviving are two sons, Donald Ray, Portland, Maine, and Peter Robert-James, Maynard, Maine; a stepdaughter, Sally Kelley, Scarborough, Maine; three brothers, Earl Ray, Charles Everett and Rupert Miles, all of Parishville, and several step grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Three brothers, Robert, King and Francis, and two sisters, Nellie Kingsley and Lena Sheldon, died before him.
