Harris was the son of William Samuel Harrison (1780-1834) and his wife Mary Keller (dates unk). William S. Harrison, his father, was the original owner of the famous Monteith plantation on the Savannah River in Chatham County.

Harris' 3rd great grandfather was Benjamin Harrison, a signer of the Declaration of Independence for Virginia.
