WILLIAMSBURG - Retired Army Colonel Edward Stephan 'Steve' Broderick, 64, died on Tuesday, May 31, at his home. He was born in Queens, N.Y. on Sept. 23, 1940, to Edward Francis Broderick, Jr. and Helen Irene Quirk. He enlisted in the Army in Aug. 1960 as an infantryman in the 101st Airborne Division and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1962. He served two combat tours in Vietnam as a company commander in the 1st Cavalry Division and as the senior advisor to the 7th Airborne Battalion of the Republic of Vietnam Airborne Division. He later served as a battalion commander in the 101st Airborne Division and was the commander of the Army Training Support Center at Ft. Eustis when he retired in 1992. During his thirty-three years of military service he was awarded two Silver Stars, the Legion of Merit, four Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, five Meritorious Service Medals, 12 Air Medals, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/ Gold Star, Silver Sar, and Bronze Star. He also was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Ranger Tab, and the Republic of Vietnam Master Parachutist Badge. He was a charter member of Chapter #1754, Military Order of the Purple Heart. He had been a Williamsburg resident for the past fifteen years and was a member of St. Bede Catholic Church. After his military career he spent 13 years as a financial advisor with Legg Mason at the Williamsburg branch. Surviving members of his family include his wife, Taesuk Broderick; three sons, Steve Broderick of Phoenix, Ariz., Alan Broderick and wife Laura of Yorktown, and Dan Broderick of Williamsburg; brother, Dr. R. Geoffrey Broderick of Locust Valley, N.Y.; and sister, Lynne Higbie of Houston, Texas. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Monday morning, June 6 at St. Bede Catholic Church. Burial, with full military honors, will be held at Arlington National Cemetery. Nelsen Funeral Home of Williamsburg, Va. is in charge of arrangements.
