Hank was born in Milwaukee, Wis., on July 26, 1924, the youngest of six children. He lived in Nevada County for the last 37 years, where he built his home along with the help of his family.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in Attu, the Aleutian Islands for 18 months and then in India until the war was over. After the war, he joined the Whitefish Bay Police Department for three years. He also owned a Chicken Delight store in Milwaukee, Wis., and became a salesman for the company, selling franchises and later, restaurant equipment. After retirement, he was a salesman for Sitting Bull Leather Co. in Nevada City.
He enjoyed watching the Milwaukee Brewers and the Green Bay Packers. He loved to tell stories to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also wrote beautiful poems. He enjoyed cooking and having the whole family over for dinner. He was active in the Democratic Party in Nevada County and was the local campaign manager for Patricia Malberg in her run for Congress. He was concerned about many issues in the world and wrote numerous letters to the editor.
He is survived by his daughters, Barbara Jones (Bill) of Nevada City, Pamela Voller (Paul) of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Laura Honda (Alan) of Fairfax; sons, James Dax (Walter) of San Diego and Thomas Dax (Deni) of Nevada City; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death in April 2013 by his wife of 66 years, Kay Dax.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the local Sierra Club or Hospice. A service is planned for a later date.
