Davis, Richard S., Jr. Age 83, who called himself "The Colonel," died December 9, 2008 from congestive heart failure in Door County Memorial Hospital. He was born August 7, 1925 to Henriette and Richard Smith Davis. He graduated from Milwaukee Country Day School in 1943 and the University of Wisconsin. His career was in sales for several Milwaukee companies. After many summers spent in Door County, Dick and his former wife, Marjorie Haskell Davis, moved to Ellison Bay permanently in 1989. During World War II, Dick served as a forward observer in Patton's Third Army. He was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart. He served in the army reserve for nineteen years. Dick was vitally interested in military history and stayed active in veteran's affairs throughout his life. He was extremely patriotic and always looked forward to riding in a Jeep at the head of Fourth of July parades. Dick played the mouth organ and enjoyed music of any kind. He loved his country, his family, northern Door, his boat, his beach, and shooting the moon in Hearts. He spent hundreds of hours messing about in the Bay. He was playful and always ready to have a good time. He was very generous and quick to compliment others. He made a lot of people laugh. He lived his life with zest and exuberance. Surviving him are his daughter, Bonnie Powers, Seattle, Washington; his sister, Meredith Davis Heart, Minneapolis; a niece and nephew, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
