COTTONDALE Hugh Brantley Ward, Jr, age 95, of Cottondale, died Sept. 15, 2012. Hugh was born in Cottondale on Aug. 5, 1917.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh Brantley Ward, Sr. and Lula Mathews Ward; his brothers, Wallace R. Ward and Herbert J. Ward; his sister, Mildred W. Booker; an infant sister; a half-brother, Henry J. Ward; and half-sister, Daisy Paige.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Grace Barnett Ward; his daughter, Becky Merriam (Mike); his son, Harold Ward (Mary); his grandchildren, whom he appreciated knowing as adults: Michael Merriam, Jr. (Shelley), Danita Corley (Paul), Brant Merriam, Sr. (Jennifer), Jimmy Ward (Apryl), and Lizabeth Irvin (Matthew); and his 11 great-grandchildren who brightened his days: Jordyn Merriam, Shelby Merriam, Brantley Merriam, Jr, Mallory Merriam, Clay Merriam, Jackson Irvin, Connor Beth Irvin, Callie Grace Corley, Rylan Corley, Mason Ward, and Veronica Ward. He is also survived by two brothers, Jack W. Ward and Alfred E. Ward; a sister-in-law, Ora S. Ward; a brother-in-law, Oscar Booker; a very special niece and caregiver, Lynette Cagle; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Not only was Hugh a dedicated Christian, a member of Cottondale Christian Church for 55 years serving in many capacities, he was also a faithful husband, beloved Daddy, and extraordinary PaPa (Paw Paw). He worked for Gulf States Paper for over 35 years. He enjoyed being outside working in the garden, reading, and being with his family.

Pallbearers will be Michael Merriam, Jr, Jimmy Ward, Brantley Merriam, Jr, Paul Corley, Matthew Irvin, and Phillip Weaver.

Honorary pallbearers are Brant Merriam, Sr. (currently serving our country in Afghanistan), Frank and Bobbye Burns, Nobie and David Ewing, Lewis Jones, Eber and Ethel Barnett, Sara Barnett, Sara and Johnny Bostick, Charles and Joanna McElroy, Wayne and Pam Kelly, Thad Pate, Cottondale Christian Church, family and friends on Brant Ward Road, Gulf States Paper employees, past and present employees of Cottondale Elementary School, Forest Manor Nursing Home staff and administration, Hospice of West Alabama, Dr. Leonard Jones and staff at Tuskaloosa Internal Medicine, Dr. Daniel C. Potts, Rev. Jim Smith, Rev. and Mrs. James Walker, and Robert Burns.
