The family story has it that John William D. May, as a boy, was a messenger in the War of Northern Aggression and had for this was given the nickname "Pony Bill".
Pony May, was married to Mary Betty Hairston on 13 January 1870, in Nevada County, Arkansas. Their family was first enumerated in Comance County, Texas in 1900. Pony and Bettie had the following children: William Henry (Will) May b. 1870; Nora S. May b. abt 1873; Mary Ella May b. 1874; Martha (Mattie) May b. abt 1875; Dorothy (Dortha) May b. abt 1876; John Zebedee (Zebb) May b. 1881; and Lulu E. May b. 1889.
