Barton W. Brooks, of Clayton, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 1968, of wounds received while engaged in combat in Vietnam. He was 21 years, one month and seven days old.

Bart entered the armed services on June 6, 1967, and was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. He took his advance Infantry Training at Ft. Polk, La., and was sent to Vietnam on Nov. 16, 1967. On Feb. 27, 1968, it was reported to the family that Sp. 4 Barton W. Brooks was missing in action, and the following day there came a confirmation that he had been killed in action. He had died of wounds received the day of his death.

Bart was born on Jan. 18, 1947, in Norton, and had lived his entire life, until the time he entered the services, in the Clayton community. He attended the Clayton Grade School and Jennings High School. He was graduated from High School in 1965. He attended Ft. Hays State College two years prior to entering the service.

In school, he participated in all kinds of sports, being on the football and basketball teams and running in track. In 1964, he attended the convention of the Fellowship of Christian Athletics in Estes Park, Colo. This organization was a great source of inspiration and guidance for him. His love of his Master to all with whom he came in contact, and he had it as a shield for his soul while in Vietnam, serving his country.

Bart is survived by the immediate family: his parents, Weldon and Merrice Brooks of the home near Clayton, one brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Gail Brooks and son, Steve, of Johnson, Kansas, and one sister, Barbara Brooks, s sophomore at Ft. Hays State College.

He is survived by both paternal grandparents, Glenn and Blanche Brooks, of near Clayton, and both maternal grandparents, Fay and Ida Goodman, of Clayton.

Funeral services were held in the Clayton EUB Church of Clayton on Sunday, March 10, 1968, at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Wayne Sharp in charge of the services.

The Clayton Church Choir sang two hymns: Our God Is Great and The Beautiful Garden of Prayer. Lucretia Norris was organist.

Casket bearers were David Ward, Ronald Sulzman, Jack Georgeson, Mac Harris, Byron Burns and Clinton Arnold. Military escort for the body was Sgt. Steven Wright. A final salute by the Honor Guard from Ft. Riley, Kansas, consisted of a firing squad of 6 men, 2 flag holders and 1 bugler, lead by Sgt. Raymond Trepamosky.

Interment was in the Clayton Cemetery. Scott-Brantley Funeral Home of Norton was in charge of funeral arrangements.
