MSGR. MARK S. EBNER, V.F., was the longtime Pastor of St. George Catholic Church in Gardenville, a neighborhood located in Affton, MO (a South St. Louis suburb), an area originally favored by German-Americans, particularly truck farmers and small merchants and automotive dealers. The parish continues today in its original location.
He built the present St. George Parish School (now the St. George Parish Community Center), and served as Southeast County Area Dean (vicar forane) for the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
He also negotiated some unique ecumenical real estate uses for parish functions on adjacent property that set a national precedent prior to Vatican II. (The St. George athletic fields, located on the grounds of the adjacent New Mount Sinai (Jewish) Cemetery, have a 99-year lease at nominal cost on the unused burial space from the New Mount Sinai (Jewish) Cemetery Association, which Msgr. Ebner negotiated with the cemetery authorities).
Born in St. Louis, he was ordained June 9, 1929 at the New Cathedral Basilica in Midtown by Archbishop John J. Glennon. He had attended Kenrick Latin High School and Kenrick Seminary, where he was active in liturgical movement discussion groups led by the late Msgr. Martin B. Hellriegel which anticipated the participative liturgy of the Second Vatican Council.
After a concelebrated funeral Mass at St. George Church by St. Louis Archbishop John L. May, Msgr. Ebner was buried on his family lot at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery. His name is inscribed on the family's joint slant grave marker at the head of the lot.
