Emma was the first child and only daughter of George and Lydia A.J Gladding Welch. She never married and lived with her parents in Warren, Bristol, RI as long as they were alive. After they died, she lived in a large house on Narragansett Bay in Edgewood all alone, until her niece and her family moved in to care for her. Emma traveled to Los Angeles to spend the winter in a better climate in the 1920's and early 1930's.
Her home was very badly damaged in the 1938 hurricane and her household was evacuated to the home of her brother, Dr. Stephen Albro Welch. She never returned to her home, dying in April 1939.
