Donald and his twin, Dorothy were born in the mining town of Cripple Creek, Colorado on May 16, 1894. His father was a doctor and also owned a mining claim. His twin died of meningitis at the age of 3 months and an older brother died the next month so fearing the altitude was bad for the family, they moved to Rhode Island several months later.
Don attended Providence schools and joined the Navy in World War I as a Machinist Mate becoming an Ensign by the end of the war. Don became a Manual Training teacher for many years.
