GEORGE C. FURNESS DIES IN NEW YORK
National Carbon Executive Widely Known Here

George C. Furness, 60, an executive of the National Carbon Co. who was widely known in industrial circles here, died after a brief illness yesterday at Harkness Pavilion in New York.

Born in Manchester, N. H., Mrs. Furness entered the metallurgical division of the Union Carbide & Carbon Corp. at Niagara Fall, N. Y., after his graduation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1906. Since 1913 he had been a member of the company's Eveready division in New York.

He was a pioneer in commercial broadcasting through his association with the Eveready Hour programs, which first went on the air in 1923. A member of the New York Entomological Society, he was also affiliated with the New York Academy of Sciences and the Amaryllis Society.

Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Margaret Rogers Furness, and a daughter, Betty Furness, stage, screen and radio star, who recently appeared on the Hanna stage here as a member of the cast "Doughgirls."
