Published in Redlands Daily Facts on Apr. 19, 2013Author. Born Helen Louise Grigsby in Sanderstead, Surrey, England, of American parents, and was raised in Illinois, USA. She met Carl Doss in 1937 and they married, but were unable to have the children she desired. The Dosses then turned to adoption; in a pre-2nd WW world, potential adoptions were matched ethnically and religiously to prospective parents, narrowing the prospective parental field. The Dosses fought those restrictions, and eventually adopted 12 children, most from diverse ethnic backgrounds. In 1953, the family moved to Redlands, California, bringing with them the nickname "United Nations Family". In 1954, Helen's book about the building of her family, "The Family Nobody Wanted," was published. It became an international best seller, and was the inspiration for a 1956 episode of TV's "Playhouse 90" and a 1970s film starring Shirley Jones. The family also appeared on an episode of "You Bet Your Life" with Groucho Marx, on "The Betty White Show," "The Art Linkletter Show," and "Cavalcade of Books." Helen wrote a handbook on the adoption process in 1957; "If You Adopt a Child." She was a freelance writer, her articles appearing in several publications such as Redbook. Helen and Carl Doss divorced in 1966. Helen remarried in 1984 and moved to Tucson, Arizona with her husband, Roger Reed. She retired in 2006 and moved to Spring Valley, California. At her death at 97, she was survived by nine of her children, 32 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
