A 1948 graduate of McKinley Technical High School in Washington, DC, Father Helwig graduated from St. Bonaventure University, Olean, NY, in 1953. He completed his seminary training at Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, MD, in 1958 and was ordained to the priesthood on May 31, 1958, at St. Matthew's Cathedral, Washington, DC. In 1978, he received a master's degree in pastoral counseling from Loyola University in Baltimore, MD. His first assignment as a priest in 1958 was as assistant pastor at St. Jane Frances de Chantal in Bethesda, MD. He then served at St. Mary of the Mills in Laurel, MD; at St. Francis Xavier in Washington, DC; at St. Thomas the Apostle in Washington, DC; at St. Ann in Washington, DC; at St. Luke-Marsalin Institute in Holliston, MA; and at St. Jerome in Hyattsville, MD, before returning to St. Jane Frances de Chantal in 1983. He served the de Chantal parish until he retired in 2009. While at de Chantal, Fr. Helwig also served as chaplain to Suburban Hospital. During that time, he also frequently celebrated Masses for residents at nursing homes located within the parish's boundaries. Fr. Helwig was the son of son of the late August R. HELWIG and Virginia KEELAN.
