Augusta "Gussie" Bookmyer graduated from the University of Michigan and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She majored in languages - Spanish, French, German, and Italian. She had many job offers when she graduated, but she chose Berry Company, a paint manufacturer, where she started as a secretary to the president of the company. She handled correspondence with a few accounts the company had in Mexico and one or two other places. Eventually, she took over the development of the increasing volume of export business and was made the export manager for Berry Company. In 1930, she was one of only two women export managers in Detroit. Gussie served as president of the Detroit Business Women's Club and was on the membership committee of the Woman's City Club. Gussie traveled to Europe for her job and also worked for a while in Chicago. After her sister's husband Rowland died, Gussie came to live with her sister Lenore in Birmingham, MI. She died in Bloomfield Hills, MI, in 1974.
