Dorothy was a twin with her brother, Donald born to Dr. Asa and Edith Day Allen. They were born in a rustic cabin their father had built in the mining town of Cripple Creek. Her mother was so happy to have a girl after 6 boys but Dorothy only lived 3 months, succumbing to meningitis. The family journeyed by wagon down Phantom Canyon to Canon City. There was a storm in the mountains which made the creek they had to ford many times very treacherous. They were so late, the people for the funeral had waited in church and then gone home. She was laid to rest beside her brother, Alfred.
