Jesse Louis Ward was born to Virginia (Rose) and Charles R Ward in May 1869 in Ohio. He had three full siblings, older brother Robert, younger siblings Eugene and Lenora. Jesse had an older half brother, Albert Warren Shoemaker/Schmaker, who lived with Jesse's maternal grandparents. Jesse had four younger half siblings Viola, Charles, Daniel, and Clara.

By 1873 Jesse moved from Harrison, Gallia County, Ohio to Missouri with his parents.

Jesse had some schooling and could read and write, however at the age of 11 he was working on his stepfather's farm in Polk, Missouri.

About 1898 Jesse married Dora Crump; together they had two children Floyd and Eula and lived in and near Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Jesse was killed while working with bridge carpenters near Camden, Arkansas. The bridge gang was caught in a blinding storm and were pumping their handcar across a mile long trestle to reach shelter when they spotted a train on a curve a short distance away. Jesse was killed upon impact, John Kennedy (of Ogemaw, Arkansas) died from his injuries, Elijah Allen (of Laflin, Missouri) was seriously injured but went on to recover, Ed Steves/Stevens (of Laflin, Missouri) and three other men jumped - all but one was injured. Jesse's body was returned home and he was buried in Lutesville.
