Born in Coshocton, William Pomerene was a member of the town's first high school graduating class in 1879. He graduated from law school in Cincinnati and returned to practice law with his father and as a solo practitioner, until forming Pomerene and Pomerene with his brother, Frank. William served as county prosecutor from 1893 to 1897. In 1903, he opened a practice in Columbus and in 1908 was a part of the practice Booth, Keating, Peters and Pomerene. That association continued until 1932, when he established Pomerene and Boulger with James I. Boulger. He remained a member of what became Pomerene, Pomerene and Burns in Coshocton.
