He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps where he had the distinction of being among the first troops to land on Japan near the Nagasaki area after the city was destroyed with the atomic bomb. He was discharged 1946 as Master Sergeant. Jimmy believed in being involved in is community. He was awarded the Riley-Vest Post No. 9 Distinguished Citizenship Award. He contributed more than 19,300 hours volunteering for 26 years at Bluefield Regional Medical Center and had a particular interest in the Lifeline Program; thus, earning him the nickname, Mr. Lifeline, installing 260 lifelines.
Jimmy was a charter member of the Bluefield Civitan Club and served as president twice, and also served with the United Way. He helped with the Bluefield Community Christmas Tree for 47 years, and also volunteered with the Salvation Army for 67 years. He was a volunteer with the Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce and was honored with the Distinguished Service Award by that institution in 1985.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Hyacinth Hill and a daughter, Debra Douthat; brother, Roy E., Hill and sister, Virginia H. Jones.
Survivors include two daughters, Deedy Smith and her husband Terry of Rock Hill, SC and Ginny Hill of Bluefield, son-in-law, David Douthat of Madison, AL, four grandchildren, Lori Stafford, Lisa Bradley, Ashby Gochenhour and Reid Douthat, five great grandchildren, Taylor Stafford, Colin Stafford, Benjamin Stafford, Celia Bradley and Isaiah Gochenhour.
Jimmy was a grand gentleman, a good friend, and a well respected golfer.
