Enlisted, 1895, in Troop A Cavalry, New York City. He served in Troop A Cavalry with his cousin James Crosby Brown. February 1895 Troop A was organized as Squadron A and the formal opening of the newly erected Armory was celebrated with a formal ball, January 31, 1896. In 1898 he was a member of Troop 1, Squadron A during the Spanish American War era.

In 1900 he was serving as a corporal in Troop 1, Squadron A. August of 1900, Troop 1 saw field service during the Croton Dam Strike. He was discharged from Squadron A 1n 1900.
