U.S. Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served for eight consecutive terms as a U.S. Representative from Illinois' 10th congressional district from 1957 until 1973 and for one term from Illinois 6th congressional district from 1973 until 1975. He attended Morton Junior College in Cicero, Illinois and worked as an editor for a publishing company. In 1941, he became a marketing executive for the Match Corporation of America, followed in 1951 as a public relations director for McAlear Manufacturing. That same year, he entered politics and was elected to the Berwyn, Illinois city council, followed by mayor of the city in 1953. In 1956, he he ran for and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, replacing Richard W. Hoffman. During his tenure, he served on the House Ways and Means Committee and was a strong advocate of a balanced budget. After serving nine consecutive terms in Congress, he retired in 1975 and was succeeded by Henry Hyde. He then moved to West Palm Beach, Florida where he died at the age of 90.
