He was born Oct. 29, 1936, in Elkhart County to Edward and Edith (Anglemyer) Ummel. On May 12, 1962, he married Nancy J. Wissler in Defiance, Ohio.
She survives along with one daughter, Diane E. Ummel of Goshen; one son, David W. Ummel of Goshen; three brothers, D. Eldon Ummel of Syracuse, Herbert (Muriel) Ummel of Wakarusa and J. Max Ummel of Columbia City; and four sisters, Carol Hines of Fort Wayne, Joan Kirkham of Greencastle, Lois (Arlo) Knouff of Larwill and Phyllis Swick of Columbia City.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sharon, and two brothers, Robert and Richard Ummel.
Mr. Ummel was a dairy farmer and a factory worker. He was a member of the First Church of God, Goshen, and Dairy Herd Improvement Association. He was a 1954 graduate of Beaver Dam High School in Kosciusko County.
Mr. Ummel was a U.S. Army veteran.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Steve Campagna of First Church of God officiating. Burial will be in Palestine Cemetery.
