Ronald died attempting to save Walter H. Whitman, aged 12, from drowning on May 24, 1926. Walter fell from a rowboat into deep water about fifteen feet from the bank of a lake. Stevens, fully clothed, dived from the boat to Walter. They took hold of each other, and Walter finally got hold of Stevens around the neck. They then sank and were drowned.
Ronald was awarded the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission Bronze metal for the act of heroism. It was given to his father.
