Frederick Ferdinand was named after his grandfather, the famous architect F.F. Schnitzer (see below) , who constructed many structures on the National Register of Historic Places. He married to Agnes Bauer Leonard in 1938.

His mother, Anna Schnitzer Leonard, was the daughter of F.F. Schnitzer. The Schnitzers were ancestrally related to royalty in Germany and once had a huge estate of 200 acres in Bavaria with an enormous center court.
Anna Schnitzer Lenoard's sister, Pauline Schnitzer, visited this enormous estate in Bavaria and drew sketches of it.
