Samuel was the 7th of 8 children born in Smarden, Kent, England to Benjamin Mott and Sarah Luff Mott. Sarah Luff was born February 24, 1783 in North Higham, Sussex, England, to Samuel Luff and Sarah Parker. She married Benjamin Mott (b. about 1740, death unknown), several years her senior, on October 31. 1898 in Smarden, Kent, England. They had 8 children together: Benjamin, James, John, Joseph, William, Sarah, Samuel and Richard Mott. Sarah later married Richard Brazier on September 3, 1820 in Kent, England at Maidstone. They immigrated to New York, arriving on the Acosta on July 28, 1823. Their son (unknown name) was born about 1825. At some point, Sarah and Richard Brazier became followers of Joseph Smith and were living in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, where they were Endowed on February 6, 1846. When the Mormon's left Illinois, Sarah and Richard went with them, arriving at Deseret (Salt Lake City) in 1847. She died there on December 28, 1850.

Samuel L. Mott , one of the oldest residents of Lewis County, died Monday morning at his home in Martinsburg, aged 86. He had been a resident of Martinsburg for about 26 years and for 20 years held the office of town clerk and justice of the peace.
