Survivors include her daughters, Carolyn Battle of Hoover and Sharon Battle Conerly (Mike) of Tuscaloosa; grandchildren, Julie Martin Blake of Hoover, Ashley Thompson Ramage (Ryan) of Mountain Brook, Alyson Marie Thompson (Joe Snyder, fiancé) of Lexington, S.C., Ian Michael Conerly (Suzy) of Valley, and Andrew David Conerly (Virginia) of Madison; great-grandchildren, Ethan David Blake and Evan Martin Woods of Hoover, Jackson Everette Ramage and Jacob Austin Ramage of Mountain Brook, Luke Ian Conerly and Laura Kate Conerly of Valley, and Harrison David Conerly of Madison; sisters, Hilda Hall, Anne Wiss (Vic), and Jane VanHorn (Jim); brothers, J.T. Sara Battle (Sara Marie Long) was born April 7, 1927, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to Wyman and Gertie Green Long. She was the second of eight children. She graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School in 1945. As a young lady she worked at Woolworth's and Gray's Men's Shop until she married Searcy William Battle in 1949. In the early years of their marriage, they owned and operated an IGA Grocery Store at the intersection of Highway 82 and Main Avenue in Northport. Later they owned and operated five auto parts stores in the Northport and Tuscaloosa areas. Additionally, they developed several subdivisions and built many houses. Sara managed the bookkeeping aspects of all their business ventures. She was a member of Five Points Baptist Church for 65 years where she was most recently a member of Esther's Hope Sunday School Class. She was inducted, along with her husband, into the Northport 20th Century Heritage Honor Roll, Class of 2008.
Sara was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. Since she was the second of eight children, she helped her mother care for her younger sisters and brothers. She always put others first and made sure everyone was taken care of and her family was the most important thing to her. She loved her grandchildren deeply and enjoyed watching and playing with the great-grandchildren when they visited. She was a very independent and strong lady who was kind hearted and classy. When others describe her they always use the phrase "she is such a sweet lady". Our family spent many days at her house enjoying the wonderful meals she cooked and just having fun together as a family. Even though we know she is pain free and in heaven, we will miss her dearly and think of her every day.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to some special friends who loved and cared for her: Ruth Christian, Wanda Winchester, Mary Holbert, Cherry Roby, Betty Aldridge, Louise Boone, and Andrea Mills McIntosh.
Honorary Pallbearers are Dr. Regina Harrell, Shirley Morris, RN, Esther's Hope Sunday School Class of Five Points Baptist Church, and Journey (Caring Hands) Hospice Staff and Administration.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Journey Hospice, 4930 Rice Mine Rd. N.E., Suite 103, Tuscaloosa, AL 35406 or the Alzheimer's Association .
